Hello, cupcake!

Being the last day of Easter holidays I decided to bake some cupcakes for the kids. (Magnus and neighbourhood/friends' kids) They are so good but so bad for you. 3 cups of sugar for 3 dozen chocolate cupcakes? Wowza.

I have so many left and have no idea what to do with them now. I don't want them in the house for fear of eating them! I need to start losing this baby weight now!!! Having 2 kids in 1 year did a real number on my body. There's a wedding coming up in June so I really have to find some willpower... hopefully... maybe.

How to feed happiness

Some quick news because it's actually good news and not a complaint: Magnus is walking! He's been walking around the house for over a month if he can hold on to something, and he could walk when we'd hold his hand, but now he's walking on his own! He can only walk 1-2 metres before he wants to sit and crawl, but still, we're so proud. You should see Ørjan's face - such pride.

This morning and afternoon were definite struggles, but at least I felt somewhat relieved during the evening. Ørjan took Magnus for a couple of hours which meant I had independent time to do whatever I wished. I probably should've napped but instead I made sushi. We haven't had it for so long and it was an instant pick-me-up. It was great because it meant I didn't really have to do much cooking and there wasn't much to clean up afterwards. The only drawback is that Magnus was incredibly interested in grabbing what we were eating. Oh well.

Oh, and since I didn't mention it in my earlier posts, I'm starting to get slightly paranoid that this baby might come earlier than anticipated. Maybe I'm just feeling more and seeing more signs since I've gone through all this before (just 9 months ago!) but I have this strange feeling that the baby will be here soon. It would be funny if I went into labour before my next ultrasound on Monday. I most likely won't, but you never know.

An experiment in socializing

Our little Christmas party/cocktail party went off quite well. Food, drink, and good company. It gave us a chance to be adults and have a social life if only for one evening. Ørjan dropped off Magnus at his mum's for the night which meant we also had a night alone. We haven't had one of those since our wedding anniversary this year when my mum took him for the night and we checked ourselves into the same room we shared on our wedding night. Without revealing too many details about our late-night activities I will however say that it was fantastic. I have a very loving husband that respects and appreciates my body... even at this stage of my pregnancy. Anyhow...

Last night was better than we both had anticipated. Ørjan's mum (as well as Sverre and the great grandparents) returned Magnus home and watched him for the night while we went out. Ørjan was hesitant to make a committment to attend his workplace Christmas party for over two weeks for various reasons, but I reminded him that despite all the paranoia and worries that he carries about work it was still a party and his boss, little bosses, and co-workers were only there to have a good time. We also made the decision to seat ourselves at a more social table this year which maybe was a pleasant mistake. Ørjan isn't a drinker (not even very much of a social drinker when pressured) but he appeared to have no problem pushing his limits as he challenged Oleg. I can't lean on the common misconceptions and stereotypes that Russians or Ukrainians are big drinkers, but having a Ukrainian father has given me many fine and not so pleasant drinking memories and experiences. I could see that Ørjan was intent on having a good time, but I smelled trouble when I could see him encouraging Oleg to take several more drinks and shots with him. Long story short - someone woke up with a bad headache but at least he didn't have to sleep with a bucket next to the bed! I wasn't disappointed that he decided to have a few more drinks than he could handle, but I was however worried that his condition would be slightly more altered when we returned home.

I think we enjoyed ourselves much more than last year for several reasons: A better band (it's slightly personal when it comes to last year's entertainment), a better table, and we didn't bring our worries and guilt with us this year. I've been pushing Ørjan to try to be somewhat more social (since we rarely get out due to Magnus) and I think he succeeded at it. Last year we sat at the end of the hall (which was very conveniently directly across from the food) but it was very cold and drafty. This year we sat directly across from the bar which gave us a more social view of the julebordet but unfortunately meant we were the last ones to choose our food. Speaking of the food - it was ok. Typical Christmas food (a cold table, warm table: pinnekjøtt, julepølser, ribbe, medisterkaker, and dessert which he had no room for!) eaten the same way as last year.

Now Ørjan's still sleeping off his big night and Magnus is napping. It's been a great weekend. Friday and Saturday were our very needed nights off, and today appears to be a lazy Sunday. Perfect.

Satisifed and accomplished

I feel slightly accomplished. Not because I necessarily think that I've managed to achieve or complete a handful of tasks, but because I've actually completed what I had set out to do and finished it while being satisfied. Some weekends I think, "Ok I'm really going to clean this kitchen" but then only spend an hour doing the dishes and reorganizing the fridge, but this weekend was different. I felt better, slightly more rested, and I didn't bother to make my usual TO-DO list.

We haven't really had a weekend to just relax and actually feel relaxed. Satruday started off rough (partially due to the suspicion that Magnus has more teeth coming in) because Magnus wouldn't go down for his usual naps, Ørjan was off playing Hemnesberget's 24-hour tech support (helping someone configure their new net connection), and I couldn't help but feel extra heavy due to my growing stomach. Thankfully Magnus slept through the night without any fussing, Ørjan and I managed to squeeze in some very good sex, and we all slept in until 9:15 - it was wonderful. During lunch I actually said, "I can't remember the last time I actually felt this good and I'm smiling!" because I couldn't get past the fact that I woke up on a Sunday feeling rested and ready.

I also spent some quality time calling my mum for a couple hours (which I haven't done in a while since I don't accept calling her at work as quality time) and it felt good. I mostly let her do the talking but I suppose it was good for both of us. Mum sounds quite excited about joining us in Prague this summer for our little vacation. Of course she's excited to come out and see Magnus (and the new baby!) but I think the idea of travelling has fired a spark within her. I also sat down and went through my lists for christmas cards and packages in fear of being overwhelmed if I put it off any longer. And while on the subject of Christmas I should probably also mention that Christmas Cookie Madness has officially begun. I started my first batches of Christmas cookies and goodies this afternoon - check it out here.

The laundry never got washed, the bathroom and shower stall still need to be scrubbed, and I never managed to clean out the fridge, but I'm completely happy with not having done it. If I had attempted to fill my weekend with cleaning I'm sure I would have done it half-assed and complained about it later. At least this weekend I managed to accomplish my few tasks with satisfaction, spent some quality time with my mum, and had a good time with my husband and son.
